How To Care For Your Curly Hair Extensions

Wash Day

- Make sure hair is fully detangled before applying any water to your hair.
- Use a sulphate free, protein free salon grade shampoo.
- Avoid shampooing more than twice a week to prevent extensions from drying out.
- For the best results, try to use a deep conditioning mask at least once a week for 10-30 minutes.
- Never rub friction into the extensions, only downward strokes when washing.
- Use a moisturising conditioner after every shampoo.
- Using a wide tooth comb or extension brush, only detangle wet hair with conditioner present.
- Make sure to use a leave in conditioner at the end of every wash to keep extra moisture locked in.
Night Routine
- Place hair into 1 or 2 braids
- Cover hair with bonnet or satin scarf to avoid friction & frizz
- NEVER sleep on wet hair, they will tangle.
Top Tips
1. Remove any semi-permanent hair extensions eg. Clip-ins, ponytails, halos before bed to give your natural hair a break.
2. Start with a clarifying/ detoxifying shampoo for heavy dirt and product buildup on your wash day.
3. Store hair extensions back in their dust bag when not in use. Before putting them away, polish with a leave-in conditioner and settle with a light oil, then finish with a braid to keep them neat, tangle-free and ready for your next wear.
4. Use a colour safe shampoo for coloured hair extensions to prevent the shade from fading quickly.
5. If you choose to swim in your hair extensions, apply conditioner all over to avoid chlorine or sea salts depositing into the hair. Wash with a clarifying/ detoxifying shampoo as soon as you’re finished to avoid drying out.
Avoid
- Avoid sleeping on wet or damp hair, always make sure it’s 100% dry.
- Avoid detangling curly hair without spraying a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray.
- Avoid swimming with semi-permanent/ removable hair extensions down (especially if blonde)- however, if you do decide to go for a swim, be sure to clarify shampoo the straight after as chlorine and sea salts can dry out the hair and/or colour.
- Avoid frequent usage of heat tools and high temperatures- especially for coloured hair: colour may fade quicker and textured hair: curls can loosen. Moderate use with heat protection is safe and definitely okay.
- Avoid ball-tip hairbrushes they may cause snagging at the root, especially for curly hair. A hair extensions detangling brush with flexible bristles are more gentle.
- If you have blonde or light coloured extensions, be mindful that some minerals found in bodies of water may react with your extensions and can lead to discolouration. Some sunscreens and self tanners can also lead to a change in colour, avoid the following ingredients: active ingredients avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone. Essential care
- Always use a leave-in conditioner BEFORE any oils (leave in conditioner = moisture, oils = sealant).
- Try to deep condition at least once a week for 10-30 minutes.
- Maintain a small trim to avoid split ends and to keep length retention.
- Holding the roots, only brush from bottom to top using an extension brush or wide tooth comb.
- Heat protection is crucial before using hot tools to keep colour longevity and avoid breakage.
